Who we are

Das Zentrum, or more formally the Australian-German Institute Inc., is a non-profit community organisation incorporated under the Australian Capital Territory Associations Incorporation Act. Das Zentrum was founded in 1997 to fill the gap left by the Goethe Institute’s withdrawal from Canberra and to take over its extensive local library and resource material. Since its opening, Das Zentrum has continued to add to this unique collection of German language material and to make it available to our members and to the general public. This material is housed in our premises in the Griffin Centre in Canberra’s central business district. This place also functions as a meeting place and events venue for the promotion of the language and culture of the German speaking regions of Europe.

Each year an honorary committee is elected to run the affairs of the association. The committee is supported by a very able and dedicated team of volunteers who staff our library and multimedia and information centre, and who help with the organisation of events and projects. We operate on a very restricted budget with most of our income derived from individual membership subscriptions and fund raising activities. We also receive financial support for specific projects from the Goethe Institute Australia. The A.C.T. Government provides financial support for the production of our newsletter, the Federkiel.

Anyone is welcome to apply for membership of Das Zentrum.
