Classes for Adults

Do you speak German? A little bit? Or actually pretty well? No matter – Das Zentrum’s language classes have something on offer to suit your needs.

Our experienced, highly qualified teachers teach in a small group environment (class size 8 to 14 students) to ensure individual attention and to make the most of your ability and potential. Our teachers are either native speakers, or have lived and worked for several years in the German-speaking regions of Europe and have extensive training and experience in both teaching German as a second language, and conveying the cultures of German-speaking societies in Europe.

Steps to join a class:

  1. Classes are for members of Das Zentrum, and membership is required if you want to take a class. If you are not yet a member, please sign up for membership by using the link below. Membership fees will be added to class fees when you first sign up. 
  2. Unless you are a beginner, or continuing with the same teacher, please take this free German language test to help you decide which class would best suit you.
  3. You can find class details below. Contact the teacher to check availability and to sign up.
  4. Please pay the teacher in full for the course prior to class commencement.
Classes meet at Das Zentrum, which is on the first floor of the Griffin Centre in Civic.

Available Classes:

A 1.1 – Beginner German

Class is booked out. Are you interested in learning German? This beginner course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of German and wish to achieve basic language skills for the purposes of communication, study, travel or enjoyment. You will learn how to use everyday expressions and simple sentences to be able to satisfy concrete needs; ask others simple questions and respond to their questions.

TIMES: We will meet for 12 sessions of 90 minutes each, starting on 19 February 2024 at 5.30pm-7:00pm. No classes on 11 March 2024 (Canberra Day) and on 1 April 2024 (Easter Monday). The last session is on 20 May 2024.

We need a minimum of 8 people to be able to run a class. Max number of students per class is 16. For insurance reasons, all students have to become members of “Das Zentrum” to be eligible to join our language classes.

We use Akademie Deutsch series as our main textbooks. Textbooks are not included in the course fee and need to be purchased separately.

COURSE FEE: $ 350 (includes 12 sessions and $50 annual membership) Students who are eligible for concessional membership or members who are already financial beyond 31 March 2024 will receive a refund of the applicable amount of the membership fee.

A2: Upper Beginning German (A1.2-2)

Class is now booked out. This course is a continuation of the Das Zentrum A1.2 classes from last year and is open to both new and current students. We will start with a revision of Level A1.2 and then move towards level A2 as the course progresses.

We cover a wide range of topics, from setting up home, travelling and navigating public transport, health and wellbeing, studying and working in Germany, plans for the future and more. The course covers foundational grammar concepts and vocabulary for levels A1 and A2. We will be practicing all these concepts both in book based exercises and through role play and active use of German language in the classroom.

We use Akademie Deutsch series as our main textbooks. We will be starting with Chapter 7 in Akademie Deutsch A1+ and then use Akademie Deutsch A2+ as the course progresses. Textbooks are not included in the course fee and need to be purchased separately.

TIMES: We will be meeting once a week on a Thursday even from 6:15pm - 7:45pm. Our first session will be on 22 Feb 2024. The last day of the course is 23 May 2024. No classes on 4 April (Easter holidays) and 25 April (Anzac Day).
