  • Der Rosenkavalier - 23-31 August in Canberra

    It is rare that you get to see a German Opera performed in Canberra. The National Opera presents Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at the Street Theatre in Canberra this August. Richard Georg Strauss (11 June 1864 – 8 September 1949) was a German composer and conductor renowned for his operas. Regarded as one of the foremost composers bridging the late Romantic and early modern periods. Tickets from $10:00-$55:00.

    Events Calendar & Membership To find out what is going on in Canberra and at Das Zentrum, check out our Event Listings and Event Calendar on the What's On page. Das Zentrum is hosting a number of regular events, including Kinderlesestunde (last Saturday of the month), followed by Kaffeeklatsch (last Saturday of the month), and the German Buchklub (first Monday of the month). Das Zentrum also hosts the Runder Tisch der Deutschen Sprache in Canberra, and more regular events at Das Zentrum are currently in preparation. Das Zentrum is run by volunteers, but it is our members who allow us to make this all happen. If you wish to support us, please consider becoming a member of Das Zentrum ! German Library & German Language Classes The Das Zentrum library is open several afternoons each week, when you can borrow books and DVDs, check out our magazines and chat with the librarian. You may want to call before you visit to make sure one of our volunteers is available. Our German language classes for adults are open to members of Das Zentrum. Our classes are run by qualified and experienced language teachers and focus on language skills, communication and culture.  ​ We keep class sizes small (between 10 and 18 students) which gives everyone plenty of opportunity to actively participate. Classes are held in our library in Das Zentrum, Griffin Centre, Genge Street, Canberra. Our German language classes are a lot of fun - why not join us? Events in Canberra and beyond We aim to provide information on German related events all across Canberra and the region, such as Deutscher Stammtisch, Konzerts, and exhibitions.   If you are hosting a German/Swiss/Austrian related event or know of something that should be included in our calendar, please get in touch via our contact page .   • Visit the famous Berggruen Collection with Das Zentrum - 17 August 2025

    On 17 August 2025, Das Zentrum will visit the NGA to see the Cézanne to Giacometti: Highlights from Museum Berggruen / Neue Nationalgalerie exhibition. The exhibition is presented in partnership with Museum Berggruen (Berlin) and ' presents a journey through the dynamic changes in European and Australian art in the twentieth century'. It brings over 80 works from the Berggruen collection together with over 75 works from the National Gallery’s collection and marks the first time that some of the works from the collection (including Swiss-German artist Paul Klee) will be seen in Australia.  Join us for a Sunday afternoon at the art gallery and enjoy the exhibition with friends, plus have an opportunity to meet other members of Das Zentrum before viewing the exhibit.  Please RSVP , as that would give us an indication of how many people to expect. Please note: Registration with Das Zentrum is free. Tickets for the museum are NOT included. We strongly recommend to book your museum ticket early to avoid disappointment.     Movie: The Seed of the Sacred Fig The ANU Film Club presents The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Dāne-ye anjīr-e ma'ābed) by Mohammad Rasoulof in partnership with the Embassy of the German Federal Republic at the Cultural Centre, Kambri Precinct this Friday, 8 August. Music: Canberra Bach Ensemble Concert The Canberra Bach Ensemble Concert will be performing Cantatas for the First Sunday after Trinity BWV 75, 39, 99 at the St Christopher's Cathedral , 55 Franklin St in Forrest, ACT this Saturday, 9 August, and Sunday 10 August at various times.

  • Kaffeeklatsch & Kinder-Lesestunde this Saturday

    Parents with kids: Come a long at 1:00pm for German story-time at Das Zentrum this Saturday, 29th of June! This is followed by our monthly Kaffeeklatsch: Join us for Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) and a nice chat at 1:30-2:30pm! We hope to make this a regular event for German language speakers to enjoy learning or speaking German in a relaxed atmosphere. Kaffee, Tee und Kuchen (coffee/tea and cake) provided - please register so we know how much we need to cater for. A gold coin donation would be appreciated.   • German Bookclub - Deutscher Buchklub Canberra - 4 August 2025

    Hast Du Lust, unserem Buchklub beizutreten? Wir haben noch ein paar Plätze frei. Wenn Du noch nicht Mitglied bei unserem Buchklub bist, bitte unbedingt anmelden, da die Teilnehmerzahl begrenzt ist. Wir wollen einmal im Monat zusammenkommen und uns in einer gemütlichen Runde über ein Buch auf deutsch unterhalen. Teilnahme ist kostenlos, aber eine kleine Spende (z.B, gold coin donation) wäre sehr willkommen. ​ Mach Dir keine Sorgen, wenn Du denkst, dass Du es vielleicht nicht schaffen wirst, das Buch zu Ende zu lesen. Wir planen immer ein paar Monate im Voraus, und Du bist auch dann herzlichen Willkommen, wenn Du es mal nicht geschafft hast, das Buch zu lesen. Es geht wirklich einfach darum, dass wir uns treffen und uns in netter Runde auf Deutsch über ein Buch unterhalten. ​ Bitte beachten, dass dies kein Sprachkurs ist. You can use the search function on your computer (eg "command + F" on Mac, "Ctrl + F" on Windows) to search the library catalogue. Unfortunately, it is not possible to borrow 'online', but when you come in, our friendly libarary volunteers will show you where to find everything.   • German music & art in July - August, Canberra

    Sjaella The well-known a-capalla group Sjaella from Leipzig will be performing on 23 July at the Snow Concert Hall at Canberra Grammar School in Red Hill. Sjaella has been a fixture on the universal vocal music scene for years, performing concerts at renowned festivals, and winning first prize at many competitions. The ensemble has recently been on concert tours to South Africa, Belgium, Spain, and Norway.   • Kids enjoy German story time at Das Zentrum in Canberra

    A small but eager group of youngsters came along to the Kinder-Lesestunde (German story time) at Das Zentrum this Saturday. They listened to a cute picture book story read by one of our volunteers and later joined in some playtime together. Das Zentrum is planning to open up our library for story time once a month on the last Saturday of the month. We would love to see more children with German language background to come along. And while you are there, check out our library! We have books for both kids and adults, so why not borrow something for Mum and Dad and the kids?
