  • German Ambassador visits Das Zentrum library

    A great thank you to the German Ambassador Grzeski who came to visit our library today! If you haven't been to our library or haven't checked in in a while, please drop in and see what is on offer! We have recently upgraded our space to make it even more welcoming. You can use the space for quiet study, check out our selection of books, magazines and videos or chat with our library volunteer. Opening times and contact details are on our library page .

  • Meet the author: Marcel Dirsus "How Tyrants Fall: And How Nations Survive"

    The author and political scientist Dr Marcel Dirsus will be in conversation with will be in conversation with Allan Behm, Director, International & Security Affairs Program at the Australia Institute, on his book  How Tyrants Fall: And How Nations Survive. How Tyrants Fall was recognised as Book of the Year 2024 by the Economist magazine and has been translated into 10 languages. The event takes place on 27 May 2025, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Kambri Cinema, The Australian National University Cultural Centre, Kambri Precinct, ANU, Acton ACT 2601 Registration (free) required.   • Places available in A 1.2 course

    Do you speak a little bit of German and would like to join a beginner course but not at a total beginner level? Then this could be the course for you! This continuing beginner course is for new and continuing students. It is designed for students who did the A 1.2/1 course at Das Zentrum in Term 1, or for those who have some beginner knowledge of German and wish to achieve basic language skills for the purposes of communication, study, travel or enjoyment. You will learn how to talk about a wide range of topics including your family, your job, health and wellbeing, organise restaurant visits and reserve train tickets, and ask for and give directions.  The Level A 1.2 course will start again next week. We need a minimum of 8 students to be able to offer this class. Maximum number is 16 students.   • New: Monthly Kaffeeklatsch @ Das Zentrum

    Join us for Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) and a nice chat in German at Das Zentrum on the last Saturday of each month at 1pm! This will be a regular event for both native speakers and learners of German to enjoy speaking German in a relaxed atmosphere. The library will be open at the same time, so this will be a great chance to borrow one of our many German books!

  • Term 2 German Language Classes Canberra

    Enrolment open now! German Language Classes for adults Level A 1.1/2 – Term 2 Absolute Beginner German and A 2.2/1 – Term 2 Advanced Beginner German will start this week (30 April). Commencement of Class Level A 1.2/2 – Term 2 Continuing Beginner German will start one week later, with the first class on 6 May. There are a few places left in our German conversation group (Level B1 and up). All classes take place at Das Zentrum, Genge Street, Canberra.   • 2025 German Film Festival

    The 2025 German Film Festival is on from the 30 April to the 21 May 2025. This year's selection includes a wide range of exciting movies, so make sure you download your program or get a printed copy from Das Zentrum! Das Zentrum goes to the German Film Festival - would love to see a movie, but don't want to go alone? Join us to watch "Der Buchspazierer" (The Door-to-door Bookshop) on 11 May!   • Library Open Wed & Thur afternoons

    We have a great library that is worth visiting! We stock a large range of German language books, DVDs and current subscriptions to German magazines such as Brigitte, Der Stern and Der Spiegel. Members can borrow for free! This is the best public collection of German books in Canberra, so make the most of it! We also have a shelf that is stocked with books that are free to take, so it's worth dropping in! Library Opening Times are Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 PM. Please note that the library is staffed by volunteers and while we do our best to be open on those times, we can't always garantuee that a volunteer is available. If you are visiting from further away, please contact us first to confirm that we are open! Our library is at Das Zentrum, Griffin Centre, 1.03/20 Genge St, Canberra ACT 2600.

  • Term 2 Language Classes Open for Booking

    Classes for Term 2 are now open for booking. Classes start again after the Easter break (29 April 2025). Current paid members of Das Zentrum can get a discount code to remove the membership component from class fees. If you are a current Das Zentrum member and would like to join a class but have not yet received your membership discount code, please get in touc h. In Term 2, classes from Term 1 will continue.   • Conversation Group Level B1+ now available - sign up for Term 2!

    Hast Du Lust, bei unserer Konversationsgruppe mitzumachen? Geeignet für Level B1 und höher. Our Conversation Group will continue in Term 2 after Easter! Bookings for Term 2 are open now, so why not join us? The conversation group is ideal for levels B1+ and up. This is not a formal class, but a group to give you the opportunity to hear and speak German at an intermediate and higher level.   • German Language Teachers Needed!

    We are seeking German Language Teachers who would like to join us in 2025! Would you like to teach adult learners in a relaxed community setting? Our classes are very popular amongst students and a lot of fun for teachers! We would love to offer more classes and urgently need more teachers, especially for the second half of 2025.
