Why learn German? At the Tag der Deutschen Sprache, German language students from across Canberra were able to connect with university students, Embassy staff and members of the German community. Hear from personal experiences of why learning a foreign language in addition to your main subject is so valuable!

We still have some places available for Term 2 German Classes. All classes are continuing from Term 1, but new students are welcome depending on their level of pre-knowledge. If you are keen to join us, please check out our Language Classes . We also offer a Conversation Group (Level B1+), where you can practice your German in a relaxed atmosphere within a small group. Please note that we will be offering a new Complete Beginner Course in Term 3, so if you have no prior knowledge of German, we recommend you start in Term 3. Enjoy watching a German movie with friends! Join us for a pre-movie chat at the Canberra German Film Festival on 11 May 2025 for a Sunday morning screening of "The Door-to-Door Bookstore" on 11 May. "The Door to Door Bookstore" is a German Comedy, Drama, and a family film for all ages. Did you know that we not only offer German language classes but also have a library in Canberra stocked with fabulous resources? All Das Zentrum member can borrow these resources for free. We have general books and video material, but also textbooks, grammar books, bilingual 'readers' for different levels of German proficiency and we have a subscription to "Deutsch Perfekt", the German Language Magazine published by Die Zeit newspaper. "Deutsch Perfekt" is a great current affairs magazine that is designed for learners at an upper beginner to intermediate proficiency. And you can borrow it for free! The author and political scientist Dr Marcel Dirsus will be in conversation with will be in conversation with Allan Behm, Director, International & Security Affairs Program at the Australia Institute, on his book  How Tyrants Fall: And How Nations Survive. How Tyrants Fall was recognised as Book of the Year 2024 by the Economist magazine and has been translated into 10 languages. The event takes place on 27 May 2025, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Kambri Cinema, The Australian National University Cultural Centre, Kambri Precinct, ANU, Acton ACT 2601 Registration (free) required. Do you speak a little bit of German and would like to join a beginner course but not at a total beginner level? Then this could be the course for you! This continuing beginner course is for new and continuing students. It is designed for students who did the A 1.2/1 course at Das Zentrum in Term 1, or for those who have some beginner knowledge of German and wish to achieve basic language skills for the purposes of communication, study, travel or enjoyment. You will learn how to talk about a wide range of topics including your family, your job, health and wellbeing, organise restaurant visits and reserve train tickets, and ask for and give directions.  The Level A 1.2 course will start again next week. We need a minimum of 8 students to be able to offer this class. Maximum number is 16 students. Join us for Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) and a nice chat in German at Das Zentrum on the last Saturday of each month at 1pm! This will be a regular event for both native speakers and learners of German to enjoy speaking German in a relaxed atmosphere. The library will be open at the same time, so this will be a great chance to borrow one of our many German books!

Enrolment open now! German Language Classes for adults Level A 1.1/2 – Term 2 Absolute Beginner German and A 2.2/1 – Term 2 Advanced Beginner German will start this week (30 April). Commencement of Class Level A 1.2/2 – Term 2 Continuing Beginner German will start one week later, with the first class on 6 May. There are a few places left in our German conversation group (Level B1 and up). All classes take place at Das Zentrum, Genge Street, Canberra. The 2025 German Film Festival is on from the 30 April to the 21 May 2025. This year's selection includes a wide range of exciting movies, so make sure you download your program or get a printed copy from Das Zentrum!
